Cambodia's Ministry of Environment Plants Over Half a Million Trees in Six Months

Phnom Penh, March 14, 2024: The Department of Environment for the Phnom Penh Capital-Province has made significant progress in its tree distribution campaign, planting over 55,000 trees in just six months. This initiative is part of a larger goal to distribute 1 million trees to citizens annually.

As of March 12, 2024, the Ministry of Environment reports a total of 556,978 trees planted nationwide. These trees are not only planted by the ministry but also distributed to citizens for planting in their homes, schools, pagodas (Wat Aram), and communities. The total number of distributed trees has reached 205,360.

Launched on October 10th of last year, the tree distribution campaign aligns with the Ministry of Environment's strategy to increase green spaces across Cambodia. The initiative aims to provide 1 million free trees to citizens annually, starting in 2024.

Planting trees strategically based on land suitability is a key aspect of the campaign. This ensures planting outpaces deforestation and contributes to the national goal of achieving 60% forest cover by 2050.

The Ministry of Environment's tree distribution campaign demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental sustainability in Cambodia. By encouraging citizen participation in tree planting, the initiative holds promise for a greener future for the country.
